Common questions
Before you spec
Why these specific species for sauna, hot tub and ice bath use?
Cedar, Hinoki and Sugi share three key properties for wellness applications: low thermal conductivity (they don't get scaldingly hot to sit on), natural antimicrobial oils (resist mould and bacteria in damp wet-area conditions), and aromatic terpenes that enhance the wellness experience. Cedar is the Nordic sauna standard. Hinoki is used in Japan's finest onsen baths for the same reasons it lasts 1,300 years in temple construction. Sugi is the warmer, more affordable cousin — proven heat-and-moisture resistance with traditional Japanese authenticity.
What's the difference between interior and exterior sauna timbers?
Interior linings (benches, walls, ceilings, door & window frames) need to be soft-grained, low-resin, and stay cool to the touch under sauna heat. Western Red Cedar, Hinoki and Sugi are the proven choices.
Exterior cladding on outdoor saunas, hot tub surrounds and ice bath enclosures needs UV resistance, weather durability, and visual character. Yakisugi (charred Japanese cypress) is the most popular choice — the traditional fire treatment creates a deep charcoal finish with virtually zero maintenance. Australian hardwoods like Spotted Gum, Blackbutt, Rosewood and Ironbark also work well for exterior applications.

Can I use just one species for the whole build?
Western Red Cedar can do both interior and exterior if your design calls for consistency — it's weather-resistant enough for cladding and soft enough for benches.
Yakisugi is exterior only — the charred surface isn't suited to direct skin contact at high heat.
Hinoki and Sugi are interior-only as wellness timbers — for exterior cladding on a Japanese-themed build, pair them with Yakisugi outside.

What sizes and profiles are available?
Standard products include T&G lining boards, bench slats, and cladding profiles in common sauna dimensions. We also offer custom machining for non-standard widths, thicknesses, and profiles — bring us your spec or your designer's drawings. Lengths vary by species and inventory.
How fast can you supply?
Most in-stock species ship within 2–5 business days. Custom-machined orders or less common species (Western Red Cedar Clears, custom-profiled Hinoki) may take 3–6 weeks. Call us with your project context and we'll confirm lead times before you commit.
Can I order a sample?
Yes — we can send sample offcuts of any species we stock. Most architects and builders request a sample pack covering Cedar, Hinoki and Sugi so they can present options to clients. Contact us with your project context.
