$35 per linear metre (Inc. GST)

Authentic Yakisugi (Shou Sugi Ban) charred and brushed cedar cladding, imported directly from Japan Yakisugi in Gifu, Japan. We bring the boards into Australia raw and uncoated, then finish them locally in Brisbane. You get a 100% authentic Japanese product, coated and colour-matched to your project.

The Yakisugi process

For over 75 years, Japan Yakisugi has charred Japanese sugi (cedar) over open flame using methods refined across three generations, then wire-brushed the surface to reveal the grain beneath. The result is a timber that resists rot, insects and UV naturally — and gains character the longer it lives.

Coated locally, your way

We import the cladding bare so we can finish it here in Australia. That gives you full control over both colour and coating system.

Six standard colours — all coated in Rubio Monocoat:

  • Black
  • Snow White
  • Coastal Grey
  • Taisha
  • Clear
  • Indigo

Custom colours available on request — talk to us about your project palette.

Alternative coating systems available: Woca, Intergrain or Cutek. Just specify on order.

Why Yakisugi

  • Built to last. Properly installed exterior Yakisugi lasts 80+ years.

  • Carbon-positive. Each board stores carbon for its full lifespan.
  • Authentic. Charred in Japan to traditional standards — not Australian-charred plantation pine.

FAQ

What's the lead time?
3–4 weeks for stock items in any of our six standard Rubio Monocoat colours. Custom colours and alternative coating systems run slightly longer — we'll confirm timing when you order.

Can I get a sample?
Yes. Order a sample pack to see and feel the texture, colour and char before committing to the full quantity.

Indoor or outdoor?
Both. Yakisugi works as exterior cladding, fencing and soffits, and equally well as interior feature walls and ceilings.

Will the colour fade?
The char itself is permanent. The applied coating slowly weathers under UV and will require periodic re-oiling.

Can I order a custom colour?
Yes. We can colour-match to any Rubio Monocoat, Woca, Intergrain or Cutek shade. Send us your spec and we'll quote.
