Common questions

Before you spec

What's the difference between Yakisugi, Hinoki and Sugi?
Sugi (Japanese Cedar) — light, soft, dimensionally stable cypress. Natural pale honey colour with fine grain. Most common base timber for cladding and lining.

Hinoki (Japanese Cypress) — slightly denser than Sugi with a luminous fine grain and natural aromatic property. Premium choice for interior lining, joinery and sauna fit-outs.

Yakisugi (charred Sugi) — Sugi prepared using the traditional charring (shou sugi ban) technique. Available Charred, Brushed, or Brushed & Oiled. Naturally fire-retardant, weather-resistant, and visually dramatic.
How does Yakisugi (charred timber) age?
Yakisugi has been used on Japanese homes for over 1,000 years. The carbonised surface protects the underlying timber from rot, UV and insects. Over decades the charred surface slowly weathers — the deepest black mellows toward grey, especially on exterior installations. Properly installed Yakisugi can last 80+ years without re-treatment.
Can I use it on Australian exteriors?
Yes — Yakisugi and Hinoki are particularly well-suited to Australian conditions. Yakisugi's carbonised surface gives exceptional UV, fire, and weather resistance. Hinoki has natural decay and termite resistance. We supply for residential cladding, commercial facades, hospitality fit-outs, sauna construction, and architectural features across all states.
How is it installed?
Standard cladding install methods apply — battens fixed to a substrate, then boards face-fixed with cladding screws or nails. We strongly recommend stainless steel screws or silicon bronze nails — Japanese timber species contain natural tannins that react with regular steel fasteners and cause black staining around the fastener heads. We supply installation guides with every order. Trade installers familiar with cedar cladding will be comfortable with Yakisugi and Hinoki.
Can I order a sample before committing?
Yes — we offer sample packs from $25. Most architects request samples of multiple finishes (e.g. Charred + Brushed + Oiled Yakisugi) so they can present options to clients. Contact us to organise.
