Before you spec
What's the difference between Yakisugi, Hinoki and Sugi?
Sugi (Japanese Cedar) — light, soft, dimensionally stable. Cinnamon heartwood against pale sapwood with tight character knots. The base timber for cladding and lining, and the timber Yakisugi is made from.
Hinoki (Japanese Cypress) — denser and paler than Sugi, with a fine luminous grain and a natural citrus aroma. The premium choice for interior lining, joinery and sauna fit-outs.
Yakisugi — Sugi charred using the traditional shou sugi ban method. Available Charred (Sumi), Charred & Brushed, or Brushed & Oiled in six colours. Naturally fire-retardant and weather-resistant.

How does Yakisugi age in Australian conditions?
The carbonised surface protects the timber from rot, UV and insects. Over decades the deepest black mellows toward grey, most noticeably on north and west elevations. Bare Sumi is meant to flake and patina — that's the traditional look. Brushed and coated boards hold colour far longer and stay stable. Properly installed, Yakisugi lasts 80+ years without re-treatment.
How is it installed?
Standard cladding practice — battens fixed to the substrate, boards face-fixed over the top. Use stainless steel screws or silicon bronze nails: Japanese species contain natural tannins that react with regular steel and cause black staining around the fastener heads. We supply installation guides with every order.
Can I use it on Australian exteriors?
Yes — Yakisugi is particularly well suited to Australian conditions, with exceptional UV, fire and weather resistance from the charred surface alone. Hinoki has natural decay and termite resistance and is best kept to lining, soffits and protected areas. We supply for residential cladding, commercial facades, hospitality fit-outs and sauna construction across all states.

Yes — sample packs start at $25. Most architects request several finishes at once (Sumi alongside a couple of the brushed colours) so they can present real options to a client. Contact us to organise.
