How These Screens Are Built
Every batten in these screens is a single solid piece of kiln-dried hardwood — no finger joints, no glued-up offcuts. A one-piece batten has no weak points to open up in the sun and rain, so your screen stays straight and stable for the long haul. Battens are 42mm x 19mm (32mm x 19mm on Spotted Gum), fixed to 42mm x 19mm rails on the back.
We fasten every batten with galvanised screws, not stainless. Stainless screws are more brittle and can harden when driven into dense hardwood, snapping later when the timber is exposed to the elements — galvanised screws are stronger and hold tight for the life of the screen. Every rear screw is pre-drilled so the timber never cracks.
